RUNOUR (PER TSN): Jokinen + Prust (CGY) for Kotalik + Higgins (NYR)
This just in, kiddies...

EK is also reporting it now, too:

I think Sutter has lost his mind a bit... holy desperation, Batman! Why would anyone trade for Kotalik's contract?
EDIT: Eep, I see asq2 got it already... my bad. Merge, mods!

I don't mind trading Jokinen.... I just don't get taking Kotalik back in return.
CGY is panicking, big time. These are decisions that will hurt the franchise for years to come. When CGY goes out in round 1 or 2 this year, it will be Sutter's head.

Re: Olli Jokinen headed to NYR? (CONFIRMED)
I think it's a lateral trade at best. Kotalik gives them a PP specialist and Higgins has been good before but is playing in that mess in NY.
The Rangers pick up a center for Gaborik, although not much of one anymore judging his recent play. And Prust seems to be a throw in.
Weird Dung...

Jokinen seems to step it up every time he's dealt for some reason. He's an ideal rental, IMO.

Looks like Calgary has decided to emulate the Ottawa style (
) of the mini rebuild by casting out the distractions and taking in an offence balanced across their lines.

McGrattan?
Nah, he's cleaned it up, very respectable.
The Rangers need to somehow move Drury and Redden and they would be in very good shape.

How is that different from any other year?
What I just don't get is why Kotalik would block the trade? Who the hell would want to stay in NYR (the org, not the city)?

Jokinen can't be a center for Gaborik though, he shoots all the time, never passes. At least that's the word from Calgary fans and the Phoenix fan. We'll see though, very, very weird Dung.

The deal is off for now. Jokinen will play tonight vs. Philly, possibly Prust as well, but it could be Grat's. Not sure if it is Calgary backing out, or Kotalik refusing to waive. Bob McK commented over on TSN via twitter.

Until this happened I think he was. Waddell apparently like Higgins as one of the pieces. Whatever, just replace Kotalik with someone else and waive Kotalik.

Unbelievable. Truly unreal, what happened there? The players were informed, everything looked like it was happening and they're playing tonight? Wow.

Does anyone think that because Kotalik was 'traded' (before it all went to Dung) - that there might actually be a market for Cheechoo?

Then let's be fair. Cheechoo and Picard are probably gone. That's 4 million dollars, that's one fun pending-UFA winger. Not sure who, but let the speculation begin. As much as I
Shannon, he'll be fine not cracking the top 6 again because we've acquired someone._________________

Perhaps in Europe ... where all washed NHLers go.
Either buying him out or getting rid of via re-entry waivers are the only 2 possibilities I see for us getting rid of him.
His effort and attitude aren't even in question ... he physically can't put up the numbers so there's no hope for a fresh start on another team. He is what he is now.

A playoff team that's looking for an extra physical presence and character would be foolish not to consider acquiring Cheechoo.

Word is Calgary is holding off on trade as long as Rangers are offering Gillroy. Calgary wants Hggins along w/ Kotalik for Jokinen/Prust
Strickland 1 minute ago from web
Gilroy over Higgins? Okay, that's great. Diddle man, Higgins is being flipped (with a ton of other things) for Kovalchuk for sure.

It's the following year after that has people not interested in him.
Rentals are normally pending free agents, because the team has no obligation to them after the season.
Cheechoo was a salary dump by SJ and is now Ottawa's problem.

What the hell is wrong with NY trying to trade a guy they just signed out of college? They just signed him April 17, not even a year ago.

However...Kotalik was part of a trade to Calgary and he has TWO more years at 3 million and is every bit the bust that Cheechoo is (more actually IMO). That changed the landscape a lot IMO.

SpezzD already mentioned it but I just can't believe there's a trade market for Kotalik.
When he signed in the summer I orginally misread the report and thought he had signed for 3 years at 1 milllion per -- I thought that was too much.
For 3 million dollars this guy is wayyy to 1 dimensional.
Sutter has lost his mind.

Joke-inen has zero chemistry with Iginla though. They've tried all sorts of wingers with them and nothing is working. It's clearly a chemistry issue between the two of them. If they can move Olli and bring in the required pieces for Kovalchuk, then it doesn't matter who's at centre between those two. You could put Gordie Howe there (and he's 112 years old) he'd produce.

There may be a team that would take Cheechoo, maybe not. Likely if they do it is because they are getting something really important and again Cheechoo is just a throw in.
I suspect if there was interest, SJ wouldn't have had such a difficult time moving him.
Back to Kotalik, I recall being pretty surprised by the signing. I thought it was a bad deal, too expensive, and I remember many people (maybe not here cause I couldn't find posts) disagreeing with me saying it was a great deal. I thought the Rangers should have just kept Zherdev, or at least given Grachev a serious shot. Guess I was right afterall. Must have been those smart fans over at TSN.

I don't even really care about trade Cheechoo any more, I think he might be of use the rest of this year...but Murray has to at least make some calls now that Kotalik was 'traded'. If we could plug Whitney in Cheechoo's spot...well, that's more than a slight upgrade to say the least.

If we could plug Whitney in Cheechoo's spot...well, that's more than a slight upgrade to say the least.
Nor do I. I firmly believe that he's an asset on a playoff team.

Especially if you have a significant injury in the top six. I would advocate putting Cheechoo with Fisher and Kovalev from here on, but Regin is just so damn cool and good that that's gonna be hard.
He needs 20 games with Fisher and Kovalev for us to see if he can do anything.

Funny you mention that, cause that's exactly what I did in NHL 10
Cheechoo for Whitney straight up.
