There has to be more to this for the Flames than just these two deals. Are they going to be making a pitch for Lecavalier or Kovalchuk?

What I don't understand is why the Flames would want Kotalik and his salary going forward when Jokinen's salary would be coming off the books. If he's that much of a disruption, put him on waivers and get rid of him, but to take on Kotalik's salary is a head scratcher. Also, Higgins has been a horrendous bust for the Rangers, why would the Flames be any different?

Odd, odd day for Sutter. He may have set himself up to be fired soon.

To me it looks like Calgary is blaming their recent skid on the dirty laundry in the room. Well today they cleaned that laundry and got a bunch of mediocre players in return.

Let's see if this "team concept" will work. Personally, Calgary gave up a lot of talent and didn't get an abundance of it back.

That's an interesting theory to be honest. Jokinen is the black plague and Phaneuf was apparently they devil, so let's see what happens now. Everyone should remember this isn't knee-jerk, Sutter said he'd been working on the Phaneuf deal for 7-10 days, so Iginla knew all about it - and obviously gave it the thumbs up.

I don't mind trading Jokinen.... I just don't get taking Kotalik back in return.

CGY is panicking, big time. These are decisions that will hurt the franchise for years to come. When CGY goes out in round 1 or 2 this year, it will be Sutter's head.

I think it's a lateral trade at best. Kotalik gives them a PP specialist and Higgins has been good before but is playing in that mess in NY.

The Rangers pick up a center for Gaborik, although not much of one anymore judging his recent play. And Prust seems to be a throw in.

Jokinen can't be a center for Gaborik though, he shoots all the time, never passes. At least that's the word from Calgary fans and the Phoenix fan. We'll see though, very, very weird Dung.

The deal is off for now. Jokinen will play tonight vs. Philly, possibly Prust as well, but it could be Grat's. Not sure if it is Calgary backing out, or Kotalik refusing to waive. Bob McK commented over on TSN via twitter.

Rentals are normally pending free agents, because the team has no obligation to them after the season.

Cheechoo was a salary dump by SJ and is now Ottawa's problem.

What the hell is wrong with NY trying to trade a guy they just signed out of college? They just signed him April 17, not even a year ago.

However...Kotalik was part of a trade to Calgary and he has TWO more years at 3 million and is every bit the bust that Cheechoo is (more actually IMO). That changed the landscape a lot IMO.

Maybe the guy that Calgary goes after is Vinny? Remember Higgins was a part of that trade, wasn't he?
