Did Ottawa pick the right player?
Re: 08 Draft (a retrospection): Karlsson or Eberle?
Huge Eberle fan but at the time Karlsson was the rigth move and still is... We needed him more then we needed Eberle and that's what we went for...

Yeah. But is Eberle gregarious and engaging?
I think you're missing the point Dash.

Cowen didn't look great for most of it, but I really liked what I saw in the final game.<<< strange, right? The thing that stood out to me all game long was "who is a big game player?" That's all you can really see in that tournament. There were players like Kadri, Allen, and Tuebert (among others) who stuck out like a sore thumb, in terms of being non-big game... On the other hand, there was Kozun, Eberle, and yes, Cowen.
Kozun and Cowen may not have factored into the scoring all that much, but they didn't seem to be taken over by the moment. I can't explain it any other way than saying that there's a reason why Cowen has a mem cup. You could see the lack of mobility and early in the game you could clearly see the lack of confidence (which I don't blame on him) but he was reliable in his TOI. It's hard to get a read on a guy when he plays one shift every 10 minutes, but what I saw from Cowen is a guy I will be comfortable with in the clutch until the day he is no longer a member of the org.

And on topic, Karlsson (as mentioned by asq) was last year's top defenseman at 18.

Eberle is small in stature, the guy we could have had that they have who will be a stud is the other swede MSP! Mark my words.
Have you seen how much size that kid put on in the past year?

MSP, Karlsosn and Petersson have all grown a lot IMO.

Good point on Petersson, I hope they get him over here next year because I think this kid; most of all, would benefit playing under Alfie's wing.marakh wrote:MSP, Karlsosn and Petersson have all grown a lot IMO.

Petersson looked a long way from NHL ready from what I saw at the WJHC.

Re: 08 Draft (a retrospection): Karlsson or Eberle?
Cowen didn't have very far to grow. Keep in mind too that he's a year behind in his development.
I do not regret that pick at all. I like MPS, but his hockey IQ could stand in the way of him becoming a consistent producer. He looks like a Swedish Michalek (which definitely isn't a bad thing but I think Cowen will end up as the better player).

MPS is in a terrible scoring drought too?

yeah thats what I thought. I'd be surprised if he was less than 2 full seasons away from the NHL.

Re: 08 Draft (a retrospection): Karlsson or Eberle?
Petersson's ability to make the NHL and stick is directly tied to his ability to improve his defensive game. He's got all the offensive skill in the world, but he'd get eaten alive defensively in the NHL. That's what (if anything) will hold him back imo.

Re: 08 Draft (a retrospection): Karlsson or Eberle?
there's also the little issue of his size and stength...that might play a role as well.
