I do to. The more I think about it, the more I believe it was absolutely the right choice.
I agree. There have been some real head scratchers at the Oscars though (Ed Norton getting beat for Best Actor in American History X by Roberto Benigni comes to mind).
You see, that's the kind of thing that I'm talking about. The members of the Academy won't give an award to a movie portraying skin heads in the 90's in America. Life was beautiful was a cool movie, but seriously that best actor oscar was just plain meh. He didn't do anythign special at all. Context over talent, once again.
Shakespeare in love... well probably the worst award in the history of the Academy.

Hurt Locker was a great movie, avatar was great to but its so over rated and it seems to win every award, in my mind james camreon is secretly paying every one of to give him awards and to be mentioned in every academy award speech

Re: POLL: Avatar or The Hurt Locker?
If anyone watched Shutter Island, they'd realize that Martin Scorcese is a movie-directing deity.
The list of amazingly good movies he's made is unsurpassable:
Shutter Island
The Departed
The Aviator
Gangs of New York
Casino
Cape Fear
Goodfellas
Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
Cinematic royalty. His movies are the pinnacle of achievement in film.
Edit: Forgot The Color of Money

Shutter Island might actually be one of the three best movies he's ever made. Pure epic. I was talking about it for days after.

I don't understand the criticisms War of the Worlds gets. It's so much great suspense and thrill packed into one movie, perhaps the end was silly, but I thought Spielberg nailed that one - and I liked Cruise in it as well. Definitely one that I have in my collection - and Mel loved it as well, we probably watch it once a year.

Yep I've seen all those and I love most of them, but here's the question. If you give any of those movies to another director, do you think the quality downgrades much?
I mean, have you seen the asian version of the departed? it's arguably better...

My favourite movie of the year was Inglorious Basterds. It takes you in from the very first scene and doesn't let go until it's done, very entertaining. Loved the hurt locker and avatar was also quite good, with that being said though not surprised it didn't win.
And yes, Scorcese is the man. What a list of movies he's made. Shutter Island is definately a must see!

A seriously tough question to answer because of the one factor that seems to be a major part of all of his movies: generational actor/actress.
Leonardo DiCaprio is without a doubt the driving force behind all of those movies. The guy is proving himself to be one of the best actors of any generation.
Before that he had the strength of Robert De Niro's acting helping propel the plot lines and advance the emotional tie you create out of enjoyable movies.
So the question becomes, is Scorcese a lucky bastard to have such generational acting talents in his movie or are these two guys propelled by Scorcese's directing genius?
You answer that question and you answer your own question too.

Re: POLL: Avatar or The Hurt Locker?
No one could have directed Goodfellas or Casino like Scorcese did. He made those films feel so real, they are they greatest achievement is drama/mob films, especially Goodfellas. The Godfather is The Godfather, but Goodfellas has to be considered the starkest look at the mafia I would guess.
I think Gangs, Aviator - movies like that could have been done by a Spielberg for example, but Goodfellas would be the film that no one else could have given the proper credence to.

I'm not as big fan of Goodfellas any any fella out there, I prefer Taxi Driver and Raging bull
Difference with Godfather and Goodfellas is, after I watch the Godfather I want to be a mafioso

I saw a movie with him that hit the net several months back and it was the worst movie I've ever seen. I can't remember the title, but seriously, I'd rather staple a testicle to each thigh and be forced to run a 10k.

And Natural Born Killers - which would have been amazing had he directed it, but Don Murphy literally stole that script from him, took it to Stone and they made it.
Tarantino was so pissed off that when he finished Pulp Fiction, they asked him if he had a preference on when it came out - and he said "the same weekend as Natural Born Killer so I can blow it out of the water." And he did. Which is not bad for someone who has a ridiculously high IQ, but couldn't read properly or even write properly at the time.

Ask him yourself
Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. will be coming to Ottawa at the end of the month to film a cop action drama.
Gooding Jr. is among the Hollywood stars appearing in Sacrifice, a $6.8-million feature film by Ottawa-based Zed Productions that begins shooting around town on March 28. Also expected is Christian Slater, who appeared in the cult film Heathers as well as Pump Up The Volume.

That movie I mentioned that was god-awful also starred Cuba Gooding Jr.
Are they teaming up to win a bunch of razzies or something? This Sacrifice will be a sweeping epic no doubt.

Re: POLL: Avatar or The Hurt Locker?
Back to the subject of the poll-
I think my sister described Avatar best when she said it's like Fern Gully on crack. Sure, the visuals were stunning and incredible- but the storyline was just awful. The acting was fairly terrible, with the only saving grace being Sigourney Weaver the legend.
I absolutely hated the fact that it was trumpeted as this massive masterpiece of a movie, and consequentially had a bunch of bandwagon jumpers parading it as the best movie of all time.
I literally jumped out of my chair when the Hurt Locker won- because it truly deserved it. It was a tremendously well made movie and was enjoyable from start to finish.
This one's obviously a no-brainer for me.
Also- Basterds should have given more applause- but as many people alluded to here- just the wrong time to have that movie. Really glad that Christoph Walz won best supporting though, he was REMARKABLE in that movie.
