This is all just oppinion but I think these are some of the key components to a successful Canadian NHL Franchise.

1 - An ownership with deep pockets and a willingness and ability to ride out lean years in situations like a sagging Canadian Dollar

2 - Corporate support to keep the suites filled regularly

3 - A large group of diehard fans along with a fairly large fan base

4 - A solid marketing campaign and an ability and willingness to invest in growing the game at all levels to build support for Hockey in general in that market.

I'm sure that nice, new sports car Jim-bo must be driving wasn't purchased with sound financial reasons in mind. Granted, a $212M is probably a bit more dough, but it's not like he's planning on losing that money. At worst, he'd be able to recoup most of the initial investment when/if he sells the franchise, and the operating losses (assuming he would lose money, at least initially) could be offset at least partially by RIM. I can see it n ow -- the Hamilton Pearls -- they could get RIM to pay them $100M per year for advertising.

The Hamilton Pearls playing tonight in their home rink BlackBerry Centre. cool)

That has an awkward sound to it...

The Hamilton BlackBerry's playing at the RIM Center.

    Hmmm... equally awkward...

The Hamilton QWERTY's playing at the BlackBerry Storm Center.

    Hmmm... this is not easy...

Well, if NFLD got a team, it would have to be the Newfoundland Cod Kisser's at the Screech Center.

Halifax has a population of less than 400, 000 people. In my opinion that is far too small to have a successful NHL franchise. If people think otherwise, they're living in a dream world (in my opinion of course).

as for the population issue mojo, there are quite a few communities within 2 hours or less that I know will be supporting the Halifax team as well, Cronie himself said he would make the trip and I believe he has a 4 hour trek down the highway, hockey fans will do it.

Wait...wait...they BOTH get a team, thanks to Balsillie's largesse and the co-operation of the provincial and federal governments, who slash fat from their budgets to put the money where it matters...NHL hockey teams for the great people of our nation.

The Hamilton RIMJims--with JimBal playing center and taking the first face-off--meet the Halifax Fishsticks for the Stanley Cup.

    Imagine...

to make that happen, Rim Jim might have to get NHL 09 on his Xbox 360 or PS3, or I could play that out for him if he wants to buy me a PS3, no Xbox for me thank you very much.
