I used to be under that mistaken impression as well, and I blame the EA Sports NHL series, as that is exactly how it works in the video game.

What has he done to deserve a 1-way deal?

Waiver exemption is based on the players age, number of games in the NHL, age when he signed his contract.

NHL Waiver Rules in Plain English

I think in Hoffman's case you have to forget his current contract and look back at his first one. He signed his contract in July 2010 -- he turned 21 that calendar year, so his waiver eligibility was 3 years or 80 NHL games, whichever came first. It's been four years since that contract was signed, so his waiver exemption is over (in fact it was over last year already).

I remember Murray commenting when he signed the two-way deal that it didn't matter. He felt if Hoffman didn't make the Sens, someone would pick him up.

I really don't think anyone will pick him up. What's the point? He's proven nothing at the NHL level - why waste a roster spot right now.

This is the forward lineup I envisioned from when we acquired chiasson and signed legwand. Three solid lines that can score and a solid 4th line.

You've never heard of Garth Snow and the Islanders?

Yeah, that looks like the most likely starting point based on what we have now.

After 10 games though... we'll see...

They will need someone to replace Cory Conacher shortly.

Not sure how you can put Zibanejad ahead of Legwand but OK.

Mika Zibeneblad - career high 33 pts.

David Legwand - 11 seasons of over 33 pts, including 9 40+ point seasons.

I think we've underrated Legwand's offensive upside, especially considering he was stuck in offensive purgatory, Nashville.

I think Z-Bad will be given the opportunity to be the 2nd line centre, but we might see Legwand up there sooner rather than later.

Yeah, I think Zib will be given the chance early on to be that 2C guy... he's earned it IMO. If he stays there though will depend on how he performs. And if Legwand impresses... who knows. We'll see.

Zibanejad is easily going to get minutes over Legwand IMO. Not because Legwand doesn't deserve the minutes but we gotta give Zibby the minutes to breakout. Legwand is more of a 3C right now, probably.

    It doesn't matter. It's a 2a and 2b scenario.

Maybe Bobby Ryan should get some extra minutes too then.

I just find it interesting that we should displace the better, more proven, Legwand by giving Zibanejad more minutes. Yet the idea of giving Bobby Ryan more minutes to potentially get more out of him is out of the question.
