Kitchen refacing question

Post by Cap'n Clutch on Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:58 am

Hey all,

I am considering changing the cupboard doors and drawer faces only on my kitchen and was wondering if anyone knows how I'd find out an approximate cost? I've googled but haven't come up with anything.

Another thing (an interior designer once recommended to my wife) is to paint them. In our case it was a 17-year-old home and the cabinets, while still in very good shape, were not exactly modern. We changed all the handles and had the doors/drawers painted (using an oil-based paint) along with the front-facing surfaces of the cabinets themselves. It looked fantastic and probably a lot cheaper than getting them replaced.

Of course if the cabinets themselves are not in good shape (or low quality) then forget it.

You can also try using this to get an estimate:

Probably DIY as all I'm looking for is to swap out cupboard doors and drawer fronts. So I just want a cost for doors and drawer fronts.

I also used to work with a guy (couldn't remember his name at first) who did this as a side-business. His name is Victor Majuary -- I googled it with the added keyword "kitchen" and this came up:

I only wish I could re-paint. They're those stupid doors with the built in wooden handle at the bottem that is basically a groove that is attached to the bottom of each drawer and door. It sucks because they're in good shape but just butt ugly. If they had been normal cupboards I would have been able to re-paint the whole thing and put new hardware. Super cheap.

The kicker is that the people that owned the home before us actually chose to reface the kitchen with that crap. There is no way to spruce them up except changing the doors and drawers. Why I ask? Why? I mean seriously. There's NOTHING you can do with those except throw them in the garbage.

Measure and have a list of how many of each size you'd need etc... and then take the list to Home Depot, Rona, Lowe's etc... and get them to give you some prices etc...

You'll probably also want new hardware... so factor that in too.

Yeah. My buddy's parents chose that "crap" too back in the mid-to-late-80's. I think it was the cutting-edge of the clean/modern look back then.

They have an excuse. These people did it in the late 90's.
