To
play in the IIHF World Championship, the Olympic ice hockey tournament
and the qualifications to these competitions, players must fulfill the
following qualification requirements:

  • Each player must be under the jurisdiction of an IIHF member national association.
  • Each player must be a citizen of the country he represents.

Acquiring a new national eligibility (The ‘two-year’ case)
When
a player has changed his citizenship or has acquired another
citizenship and wants to participate for the first time in an IIHF
competition representing his new country he must:

  • Prove that he has participated for at least two
consecutive years in the national competitions of his new country
during which period he has neither transferred to another country nor
played ice hockey within any other country.
  • Have an
international transfer card (ITC) that shows the transfer to the
national competition of his new country and which was approved and
dated at least two years before the start of the IIHF competition in
    which he wishes to participate.

Change of national eligibility (The ‘four-year’ case)
A
player, who has previously participated in IIHF competition, can switch
national eligibility (but only once in a player's life) if:

  • He is a citizen of the new country of his choice
  • He
has participated for at least four consecutive years in the national
competitions of his new country, during which period he has neither
transferred to another country nor played ice hockey within any other
country and has not played for his previous country in an IIHF
competition during this four year period.
  • He has an
international transfer card (ITC) that shows the transfer to the
national competition of his new country and which was approved and
dated at least four years before the start of the IIHF competition in
    which he wishes to participate.

Imo this is where the discussion takes place---not to say that all the others are somehow locks....

If I can only pick six from "the young guys" that I would expect to play for Team Canada at every Olympics for the rest of their careers (thus forming the core for the next 2-3) there's little doubt in my mind that it is these 6:

Nash-Crosby-Richards
Doughty-Weber
Fleury

You can make a case for each player listed in the quote being a full fledged member of the 2014 team and not many people would disagree. But when it comes to the ones that I want on my team more than the rest, those are the 6.

So you can switch, but the restrictions are extensive. Good to know. Thanks Dash.

No problem. It's good to know for the next time.

Going back to the roster debate, the real decisions right now, basically player A vs. B.

Like, who would you take:

M. Richards or Thornton?
Toews or Lecavalier?
Fisher or M. Richards?

I'm not sure I agree with the debate there. I think its more like this:

Toews or M.Richards
B.Richards or Marleau
Fisher or Doan or Morrow or Smyth

Same thing really - it's going to come down to having to decide between two players for a position, then probably repeating that method again.

yeah, not an easy task. I think I've got the lineup nailed, but I also think there's a whole lot of potential to be wrong...lotta choices.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking this. It makes me sick to think I'll be rooting for Heatley and Crosby .... oh well, I'll just remind myself about the big red maple leaf on the front of the jersey.

My love for Rick Nash should more than take the stink out of Douchebag playing, Fisher and/or Doughty making the team would help to.

Not for me, in my opinion it's more a factor of you leave out in favour of him. He can ride the taxi, but let's be honest- each one of my top 6 Dmen are far more capable than Doughty. Plus, he'll have his time for Olympics- he's very young and I'm not sure World Jr. experience can translate to Olympics.

Except in Toews case. I can't think of a higher pressure situation than that shootout vs. USA when he really came through. That was one of my favourite team canada moments of all time. Team Canada Roster Debate - Page 3 805406

I would say Doughty is better than Green. I wouldn't put Green on the ice against Russia's top 2 lines. Phaneuf as well. I would take Keith, Doughty and Seabrook before Phaneuf and Green Don't forget we have to kill penalites too.

In another note, Pierre McGuire now has mIke Fisher on his team Canada list. I hope that calms Ottawa fans.

I like it. Only a few points of contention: I really don't see how they can leave either Richards off the team...I like your 3rd line, but I'm thinking Marleau gets the shaft and that means the non-Crosby/non-4th lines will get shuffled. Also, I wouldn't give Doan the nod. It's gotta be Mike Richards as the 4th line center. I don't care what he's done this year, he's had that spot labelled for two years. Fisher can move to the wing or Smyth (if healthy) can fill that last spot. As I think the taxi squad will be young guys, I doubt Lecavalier is in there anywhere. I'd imagine Toews or Stamkos would be taxi.

On D, Weber is 1A. There's no 3rd pairing there....Pronger will be lucky to see the 3rd pairing. I think he'll be there on reputation, not on merit. And I still can't see Green getting left off, just based on his numbers...He has more points than anyone on your 4th line Team Canada Roster Debate - Page 3 105237 It could happen, but I wouldn't bet on it. Seems like Seabrook might get the bump to the taxi squad or scratchzi squad. I'm betting on Doughty being a cab driver.

Can't argue with the goaltending.

All good points. I think Pronger will be logging 25+ minutes a game. He's been bad recently, but this is one of the great ones - especially when he has a future HOF F-man in Neidermayer with him.

I think Seabrook might get left off as well, but that chemistry thing is such a big deal in a short tourney. There's nothing better than having a hypothetical top 4 of Neidermayer/Pronger and Keith/Seabrook. Granted there's not a ton of familiarity with the Neider/Prong because they usually aren't paired together, but they have some for sure.

And yeah, Mike Richards should probably be on the team, but I wouldn't take Doan out to put him in personally, I'd replace Mike Fisher and put him on the taxi squad. I'd sacrifice someone to make sure he was at least there if I needed him, but I'd play Richards over him - perhaps.

I too think chemistry is important.. Team Canada should conisder:'
Redden/Phillips and Fisher/Donovan

combos/line pairs

When did Fisher and Donovan play together? Moreover, when did Redden and Phillips? You sure you watch this team?

The taxi squad is for youth and 29 just isn't that young. If someone is on the taxi squad, its going to be Richards or Toews (or Penner or Carter or Stamkos but most likely one of the first two)

My question is this: You've got Thornton with 9 points more in two games more than Brad Richards, the guy with the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe... Which would you count on more readily in the clutch?
