Also, since he cleared, aren't the Oilers able to re-waive him after a certain time period? I thought if you cleared waivers and were not assigned to the AHL after a certain time it is like you were never waived?

nah...they'll pull him back through rentry waivers and some team will take him at a 50% discount.

Agreed. Edmonton has endless cap space, so paying half of his salary hurts, but doesn't really affect their team makeup much. The players they want to sign will be there, if anyone actually wants to sign to play in Edmonton.

If he is claimed on re-entry, does Edmonton just have to pay half his salary for this year only or the remainder of his contract?

Well even if they assign him to their AHL affiliate- which is in Oklahoma City by the way- I don't think he would go. They will definately find a trade partner, it's only a matter of time.

If he doesn't go, then he's in breach on contract and the Oilers wouldn't have to pay him a red penny. Works out for them for sure - and if Souray knows there's someone who'll pay him 3.5 a year, he might opt out of Edmonton's contract by breaching it and then sign on with another team.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? I can't recall seeing a guy who might breach to get out of a contract and the team wanting him to do it.

PS I didn't realize it was Oklahoma City. What happened to Springfield?

Long story. After Anaheim's affiliate was suspended, they started using Syracuse, which was Columbus' affiliate. Then Edmonton moved their AHL affiliation to OK, and Columbus to Springfield.

And this coming year is the first year in the history of the AHL that there will be 30 teams in the "A" meaning each NHL club is solely responsible for the develpment of their own prospects.

This is huge. This is a great step for the league and its players.

Prospects can no longer be held back or treated unfairly by opposing management. Too many talents have been wasted for years now.

I'm pretty sure you can't put a player through re-entry waivers during the off-season. I don't fully understand it, but the waiver rules for the off-season are different. Re-entry waivers mandate that you demote the player to your minor-league affiliate first, but you can't do that because there are no minor-league teams playing hockey right now. So you can't put a player on re-entry waivers because you can't demote him and then recall him I think that's how it works. That's why CHI didn't try to waive Khabby the other year until very close to the start of the season, for instance.

That sucks then. I bet they keep waiving him until a team takes him.

Can't do that. I have to go right now, but I will be back to explain the CBA tomorrow if you want? Say the word.

Sure, but I thought that when you waived a player, teams had a chance to claim them. If the player passes unclaimed, the team then either assigns them to the AHL, in which case they would have to go through re-entry waivers if recalled. But if they don't assign you I thought after so long has passed you were still part of the NHL team? Maybe Rooney can explain, he knows this stuff.

until he's "sent down" he doesn't have to go through re-entry. If he isn't, than he can just be re-assigned to the NHL roster. It's as simple as that.

I can't remember a waiver scenario like this one...maybe in other sports but not hockey (lately at least).

I'm not sure why they left Springfield Souray waived! - Page 4 105237 but I just know they moved to OKC.

I think that teams just didn't want to make that decision at this point, perhaps wanted to wait and see if they could sign a FA or until they re-signed their own players and knew what there team looked like.
