That this is allowed is yet one more glaring hole in the CBA. And we lost a year of hockey for an agreement that allows this? Pathetic.

Why can they ice a team with 15 skaters?

So...the message is that there's no salary cap - providing you don't ice the correct # of players?

What's worse is that there is a rule for this:
http://www.nhl.com/cba/2005-CBA.pdf

16.4 Active Roster Size; Playing Roster.
(a) For the 2005/06 League Year and thereafter, there shall be a maximum of
twenty-three (23) Players on each Club's Active Roster at any one time, provided,
however, that, on the date of each season's Trade Deadline, a Club's Active Roster may
be increased to any number of Players the Club, in its discretion, so determines, subject to
Article 50 hereof.
(b) Except in case of emergency, there shall be no reduction of the required
minimum Playing Rosters of the Clubs, below eighteen (18) skaters and two (2)

goaltenders.

I think they had 19 and only for a small number of games (5?) at the end of a season. The Devils' cap situation started on the 1st day of the season. They have less than $90K in cap room. The NHL minimum is, what, $475K? That's $22.5K per game, although they usually pay by the number of days called up. Still, you're talking about in the neighborhood of 5 man-games or probably fewer than 10 man-days. They cannot afford more than 10 man-days lost to *anything* (including suspensions).

This is going to get worse.

People scoffed at me when I said the game had passed Lou by - but now I stand by it doubly. It's passed him by at the managerial level for sure. What he's done to the Devils is laughable right now.

And the Flames ice 19 forward last year - not quite the same, although that was ridiculous as well.

Firesale in Jersey?

You'd think the onus would be on shuttling out some higher end contracts and replacing them with league-mins.

Precisely. Man...they have Parise already, they have a nice 1B C in Zajac, they have Elias, Rolston, Arnott, Langenbrunner. What the heck was Lou thinking? What they needed was Sergei Gonchar or Z.Michalek or to re-sign Paul Martin. They have zero puck-moving skills - zero. It's actually funny to watch, the forwards have to come back deep into Jersey's zone to get the pucks, then they have to skate it through the neutral zone and to the attacking zone. By the time they finally get there, the opponent's D is waiting for them, so there's no room for Parise and Kovalchuk to do their thing.

So...they go out and acquire Arnott...who costs 4.5 million...but they don't use that money to get a top flight puck mover? What the heck is he thinking. Huge fail Lou, even if the team makes the playoffs, they'll be one and done IMO. Not enough depth.

I don't know if they can make the playoffs is the thing. They are in one of the toughest divisions in hockey with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia looking like playoff locks and the Rangers and Islanders starting to come around from obscurity.

I agree with you, the build of the team is ridiculously poor. I drafted Andy Greene in one of my fantasy teams because he's literally the only dman qualified to play on the PP. I'm not even sure I like this team defensively either. Who of their forwards even plays on the penalty kill? Who the hell is Taormina? Who the hell is Mark Fraser? He sounds like a referee. Who the hell is Urbom?

This team is screwed. I figured the offensive punch might cover for their inefficiencies elsewhere (weird saying that about the Devils), but I don't think I'm sold on that either.

What can the league do though? They can't force the Devils to put the injured players on LTIR... they can't force them to call up players and go over the cap...

Are they going to force teams to leave enough room for the minimum salary, which would adjust the cap?

The biggest losers in this are the Devils fans for paying to see a skeleton line-up iced.

That's not reasonable, but at the same time it's not reasonable to the players forced to play in that situation to be put in a position where the chances of injury could increase by being overplayed.

The NHLPA might voice their concerns about the safety of the players being played if this continues for an extended period of time. And THAT would be a reasonable complaint.

I thought this was the year where we'd start seeing Brodeur falter. I didn't think the entire team would be made out of Dung. I don't understand what he did, I don't at all understand why he needed to sign Arnott, that was the least of their worries, especially considering they got the Kovalchuk contract figured out. Now they're in a world of Dung.

At the end of the year the Devils will be right up there in the East and we shouldn't be surprised.

How were they even allowed to play? Get ready for another lockout.
