My brother is doing his MBA at INSEAD University, and is currently working on a project where he's bringing analytics to real time hockey. It has already started to pop up in other sports, with the Oakland Athletics being the first publicized case. In baseball it is called Sabermetrics, and the first year the A's implemented it, they won the pennant.

This isn't meant to be a spiel to convince anyone of the validity of the practice, the purpose is to ask a favour of anyone who would have the time to complete a quick survey. You don't have to sign up, or log in or anything, it's completely anonymous and takes 5 minutes. It's just one question: What are the most important factors in order to score in the shootout? There are a list of possible answers, just select the 5 you believe are the most important.

Thank you so much for your help and time, I really appreciate it.

That's really interesting. I put a lot of thought into it. It will be interesting to see what people think. Are we allowed to share our answers?

I actually had trouble after the first two -- kind of hard to think of the top five when your mind is trying to think of the top one, maybe two. Almost feels like, by making additional picks, you're diluting or even second-guessing your original choices.

Yeah for sure! I don't think it's meant to be a big secret. I think he's using it to create a formula/matrix. I'm not fully sure, since he hasn't told me much (calling France is really expensive!). That being said, I don't know if he'd release the most popular answers or a tabulation of all of them.

Thanks again for this everyone!

I said a player who is hot or cold, whether they already scored a goal in that game, whether they scored on the goalie in a shootout before, the way a player normally shoots (glove-side, five-hole, etc.), and their shootout percentage.

I said:

hot in the last 3 games
speed of shooter coming in
shot or deke

can't remember the rest

I said shot location (thinking specifically about Emery and the high glove-side),
approach of the skater (thinking about Omark), has already scored that night,
hot or not, and shootout success percentage (though that wasn't well thought out. Someone's shooting percentage affects the choice of that shooter, but doesn't affect his ability to score).

Yeah, mine was very similar.

I went with shot location and other mental aspects (# of goals given up by goalie, recent success of shooter, etc.)
