Not by choice, but I am with Alterna and I have no problems. Not one that people are all that familiar with, though.

My opinion on this matter is, I will never pay a single cent to bank. $12 a month for nothing? F U !

I worked my way through college and university by working at the TD bank. Back when I was there some 20 years ago, they had just started down the road of the one price service plan.

There was a time where it didn't cost you to take money out from a bank machine. It was teller withdrawals that cost (and in a way made sense as they had to staff a person). The issue is that banks are a publicly traded stock and as a result have to generate profits. I was disgusted and ended my banking career when we were reprimanded during our annual performance review if we didn't hit certain targets for service plan enrollments, opening certain accounts (which happened to be the service fee generating) and investments.

They turned the bank into a sales job and forced their employees to peddle their useless trinkets. I know several people who have a safe bolted onto the floor in a hidden location in their basement and most keep their money there. They only use the bank for mortgage.

After working there I think I hate them more than anyone....

Banks sound the alarm because we're not "saving":

    http://winnipeg.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20120209/RBC-economic-survey-20120209/20120209/?hub=WinnipegHome

If you read the article, it says we are paying down individual debt, which is better than saving AFAIC but spun as bad by the banks.

My position is that if you are debt free, you're in a better position to save. If you are on a borrowing treadmill, you will never save a dime.

Here banks pay you to open an account. eg. I got $150 to open account that has my check deposited to it. This plus ZERO fees for anything. There's no such thing as interac here, so no fees there either when you use your debit card anywhere - even online. Its pretty sweet. The USA doesn't only have subs figured out, you know......

The problem with the US is that it's full of Americans.

I've had a savings account for some time now with ING. They recently offered 100 bucks to open a checking and have your pay direct-deposited. Since I work 2 jobs, I had my pay from job #2 deposited in my new ING account.

They also sent me 50 FREE cheques. That's worth another 25 bucks.

Just to add to this. I can see why we moved now. My daughter is in the country for the summer to get a summer job. Trying to open a bank account here has been Cussing painful. You actually need an appointment to open an account where they charge you a monthly fee to use it. What. The. Fnck.

    No PCF in Quebec.
