That offer sheet has been structured to make it as difficult as possible for the Preds to match. Weber must really want out. Does Poile really want to keep him around then? Gonna create some friction. Getcha popcorn ready.

Lots of $$$ to replace losing Suter and Weber.

Millions of dollars in public funds and unsurpassed on-ice success have not been able to turn the Nashville Predators into a profitable business.

The leader of the local ownership group said members have been forced to put $60 million of their own money into the operation over the past five years, largely to cover losses. The city has given the Predators $38.6 million in the same period.

With the financial failures of other Sun Belt professional hockey teams in Dallas, Atlanta and Phoenix, the question then becomes: Is the Predators’ business model sustainable?

I never take these reports of "losses" at face value. The team manages the rink too and probably makes a tidy sum to do so.

And he still counts towards Philly's cap, I bet they would love to remove that. If only there was a team shy of the cap floor that they could move him to, and just to be fair they should include a pick or prospect, or maybe some roster player that could be top 6 material but is down on their depth charts.
Heh. If the Preds don't match, the Flyers won't be able to afford Pronger's cap hit, so they'll have to keep him on LTIR for life...

Lots of RFAs signed an offer sheet only to have their team match and then stay there long term. Kesler and Hjamarlsson come to mind.

Does not mean Weber necessarily wants out, only he wants a long-term deal like Suter, before next CBA kills such contracts.

Seriously, had he not, we'd have had to match a 12 year $102 million deal by now. Ahhhhh!

yeah I can't help but think Crazy Holmgren might have tossed an offer sheet our way(if Weber stays in Nashville at least).

Diddle Philly. I hope offersheets become like the NBA now.

Bet Polie is kicking himself for not signing Weber to a much more affordable multi-year deal like he could have last summer. If he had, Weber's next contract is under a new CBA. How many tens of millions did that decision cost Nashville ownership?

Could he have, or was this Weber's plan all along?

It's getting stupid again obviously. At this point teams won't be able to compete with the big heavy weights again like Detroit, NYR, Philly, etc. Hopefully this is all put to an end by the start of the season.

Weber wants to get paid. He's now going to get paid by one of two teams. For Philly, it's a low risk, high reward move.

I don't mind it for Philly at all. Kinda wish we had had the stones to do something similar in this specific case with a franchise D-man.

Still can't imagine the Preds not matching, playing it out this year and re-assessing. I understand 1 year @ 14 mil is a ton of cash, but give yourself the time to make a proper trade that isn't all draft picks (lower first rounders to boot).

Structure of new contract:

According to Kypreos, the Flyers have structured the deal in a way that it may be impossible for Nashville to match. The breakdown would be as follows:

2012-13 (age 27): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2013-14 (28): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2014-15 (29): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2015-16 (30): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2016-17 (31): $4 million salary + $8 million signing bonus (total $12 million)
2017-18 (32): $4 million salary + $8 million signing bonus (total $12 million)
2018-19 (33): $6 million salary
2019-20 (34): $6 million salary
2020-21 (35): $6 million salary
2021-22 (36): $6 million salary
2022-23 (37): $3 million salary
2023-24 (38): $1 million salary
2024-25 (39): $1 million salary
2025-26 (40): $1 million salary
TOTAL: $110 million

Can Weber play goal? Because if he can't, things are still real dicey in Philly.

Another factor may too be Suter. Would he have re-signed knowing that his partner was there long term? Or did Suter look at Nashville's failure to sign Weber as a red flag? Arbitration is never an option that helps foster a good relationship.

Maybe being a cheapskate isn't the best course of action if you want to build a team and hold on to your core.

It's no risk. Like I heard on the radio today, it's like calling up Kate Upton and asking for a date. If she says no, oh well, no harm in asking, but.....

Now that I see this breakdown, I am hesitant to say it's automatic that Nashville matches. That's a ton of upfront money. Dunno about Nashville's budget. The compensation isn't enough though, particularly if they are getting 4 20-30ish picks. They are basically starting over in Nashville, save for Rinne. Oh and Mr. Underwood.

Mike Fisher is a UFA after next year... I'm sure he'll re-up without issue. He's married to Nashville. Wink
