Holmstrom is retiring, too. Zetterberg will wear the 'C'. Not official yet but it's a poorly kept secret.

Kovalchuk would be leaving a lot of money on the table... like $80M.

Not to mention the lawsuit to end all lawsuits.

Or NJ doesn't have any money to pay him and said "if you want to stay, stay because we are strapped for cash and you are making tons over there too". That's my guess.

Maybe Lou has a backdoor deal to pay Kovalchuk a fraction of his salary to NOT return!!

Not sure if that's something they consider too much. They'll have to spend some of that 6.66 million on a replacement player or risk losing a lot of games. If they want to get rid of him, they need to get him on the market and see if they can get a trade in order. No one will blame them if it comes down to $$ on their part.

Either way, this is a good year for him to stay back for NJ's sake. 1 the lockout will hurt them, 2 they just lost Parise, and 3 their team is going to be awful and probably finish dead last in the East.

The amount of money coming into that organization this year will be minimal to say the least.

Heh. That would be a PR disaster... and hilarious.

NJ is already a disaster and will probably move before any other NHL franchise. Seattle Devils.

Money talks...

Wink

Heh heh. I'd be surprised too. Datsyuk does not come off as someone who would do that... but if the KHL feel he is a HUGE draw for crowds, they may be inclined to make him an offer he can't refuse...

I wonder if Silfverberg, Wiercioch and the rest will still play in the Saturday Bingo game.
