How does it not make sense? They'll both ask for a lot and that's assuming they even want to stay here.

Will the Sens offer come close to what they can get on the open market? Or will they try and force them to take whatever fits into Eugene's budget? Because it's not Ryan and Spezza's job to fit within the budget.

They're not going to come cheap and I think the era of "hometown discounts" is over. If #11 didn't give us one they sure as hell won't.

Why would you spend 7 million dollars on a 40 year old when you could put that money towards Spezza and Ryan? Two young players in the primes of their careers.

This whole Alfie thing is soooooo old now. I'm so sick of hearing about it to be honest. We have to wait until next summer to see the real state of the team when Ryan and Spezza are up for re-neg.

In 2 years they need to re-sign Methot, Spezza, Ryan and Zibanejad. Should be fun.

No, next summer they need to do it - and meh, it's Ryan and Spezza that are huge. Methot should be in at 4.5 and Zibanejad is on his 2nd contract - no big deals there really IMO.

So? They don't sign Spezza and Ryan and there is no way they can even get to the floor so, lol. People over look the simple fact they need to spend at least 56-60 million (in 2 years) and even then they have the benefit of tacking an extra year on to their deals.

Also, don't over look the other fact that Spezza has made I think around 42 or 43 million dollars as an Ottawa Senator so not too sure he will be making upwards of 8 mil a year especially if it's a retirement contract which it could very well be at the age of 32. 80 million career earnings with one organization is basically unheard of in hockey... the group of people that you can mention are basically legends only.

Zibanejad is going no where obviously, Methot is probably worth around 5 mil a season, and don't forget Michalek will probably be off the books as I don't think they even think about signing him for anything more than he's making right now. Lots of cap space in terms of getting to the floor.

you guys are forgetting that by summer of 2015 we'll have two Stanley cups in the bank. that could help in re-sign those guys.

You're assuming guys like Ryan and Spezza will even want to resign with a team that's staying near the cap floor. Even if we have the cap space and money, they might not want to stay if ownership isn't committing to winning a Cup (which generally means spending near/to the cap).

And if they need help reaching the floor there's always some bums you can overpay. Look what Florida did with Jovanovski etc.

What has Melnyk actually done?  I can't stand Watson either and will vote him out first chance I get but Melnyk is just a loud mouth and should probably be in jail based on his past.

This whole thing is politicing to the nth degree.  Until something major actually happens like Spezza, Ryan, Karlsson leaving town or anything of that sort then people are just doing the chicken little thing.  Big difference between a 41 year old looking for 7 mil a year leaving and guys who are in the prime of their careers leaving town because they couldn't pay them.
Melnyk is pretty similar to most NHL owners, that's the kind of people that buy hockey teams.

If he couldn't afford Alfie then he won't afford Ryan or Spezza.  They're different players of different ages but their agents will make big, unreasonable requests just like JP Barry did and if Eugene is going to blow up and make this personal again it won't go well.
lol good lord man, enough. Really dumb comment.

For anyone interested, City Council voted 16-7 in favour of the RCR site.

Now Coun. Wilkerson said she wanted the Council to wait a MONTH until a report came out about changes to the Raceway funding. BTW -- the Council said no.. they would not wait.. a freakin' month. The vote HAD to be done today. She also said that since March 2013 -- the Slots can no longer financially support the Racetrack. Now who is picking up the slack on that? The taxpayers? She also mentioned that this recent process has not been a fair and proper one -- that they had agreed to do last year. She also more or less indicated that this current process leaves the City open for a lawsuit... Guess she's right on that one.

Counc. Dean said the infrastructure to the site needs updating. Now who pays for that? The taxpayer.. And something that really shocked me with disbelief... the City did NOT do any economic studies on either site for the Casino. Now they took the time to do a Dept of Health review on the aspects of a Casino in way of gambling addictions... and they also, at the same time could have done an economic study.. They just chose not to..

This was a rush job. Watson knew if 2 bids went to OLG -- CTC & RCR... that CTC would win.

Apparently, according to sources, the relationship between Melnyk and the City has really soured.. That may not bode well for us hockey fans..

Onto to hockey talk.... 2 weeks until training camp.... yahoo...

I feel bad for you if it did because nothing Ottawa city council does should surprise anyone. This is a garbage proposal which adds nothing to the city and yes you're correct, the tax payer is going to foot the bill.

I hope Melnyk is still left standing out all alone in Kanata to be honest but the RCR only getting 21 tables and the tax payer footing the bill for any reno's and repairs is absolutely disgusting... 21 tables isn't even a frigging casino.

I guess you are correct in saying that.

Meanwhile the Prov of Quebec is laughing with glee and rubbing their hands together... as the residents in Ottawa will still continue to spend their dollars in Lac Leamy.. Because 21 gaming tables will not be any competition for them... Ottawa Council looks like a fool.. along with being narrow and close-minded.

I wonder how much $$ Lac Leamy provides the Prov of Quebec and Gatineau...compared to the $$ RCR provides to OLG and Ottawa.

I don't really care if he gets the casino or not but the whole process is another sole-sourcing sham. Pretending it will be an open bidding process only to decide to set it to RCR and put a joke of a casino there

They should have done studies and let all bidders present their proposals and then decide based on the merits.

So... the "Slots" as of March 2013 can't fund the Raceway... I would like to know where they are getting the funds from the last couple of months.. rather I don't think I want to know.

After looking at the OLG site... "Casinos" do fund Raceways...

So therefore, putting a couple of gaming tables in the "Slots" site (RCR) makes them a Casino... therefore the Slots/Tables can fund the Raceway.

That is what it is all about. Watson made a point today that RCR has been in business 50 yrs.. It is to benefit a small group vs what is best for the City...

I hope the Sens see 50 yrs in Ottawa.... then again.. we will be lucky if they see 25..

The problem is... Watson knows that RCR would lose the proposal to every other site... that's why it was rushed as it was.

I think Melnyk has the grounds to sue on this fact.. It's is like Collusion...
