I feel like the budget's exact level is pretty closely tied to team performance. I don't doubt that if we looked like a team that was turning the corner, we would be a little more flexible on this. We've looked like a very young team for most of this season, however, so I couldn't blame any owner for saying, 'no, we're not spending more on this, right now.'

I mean, does anyone really think that if we're, say, 3rd in the division and heading into the playoffs, the Sens would have made additions? BM has always had the flexibility to do that. The fact that we didn't just dump salary for whatever, too -- I'm sure we could have moved Condra if it was just about the money -- suggests we're OK spending on the guys we feel have value.
Performance has very little to do with, although playoff revenue could change things.

The reason the payroll was cut originally is that Melnyk's got screwed on some refinancing that was in place and then got pulled a couple years ago.

The next 2 seasons include a high level of capital costs going into SBP which offsets some of the new revenues announced last year.

The new revenue from broadcasting escalates throughout the first part of the deals which is why it will take a few years to really benefit with increased budget room.

Again, we'll see. The future is not yet written, and sorry, I have to take one internet poster's claim to intimate knowledge about the team's financial past and future with more than a pinch of salt -- say, about an entire year's worth of salt.

Good stuff. So you'll forgive when when I object to any such reports being bandied about as established facts.

Basically if they thought they'd be a budget team next season, the joke's on them for signing legwand and Michalek. Never mind the rest of the extensions, those two equal 7 million dollars - or a tenth of the cap (I believe legwand makes 3.5 next season in actual dollars).

Negative.  Sign and trade as part of package.  Why would you ditch his rights lol?

Trade his rights. He probably has zero value at the moment

Sounds like the Sens were in on Eberle hard. I wonder what they offered.

How amazing would it be to be able to see the offers teams made today?

Cowen++. That feels like the next move for this franchise, to me anyway.

I would have loved me some Eberle.

Can still happen during the draft, depending on where the Oilers draft.

Ya, I didn't hear any of that and BM certainly didn't hint towards that.

Internets.

I actually don't remember. I really only paid any attention to The Score, TSN, and CBC today, but I was looking around a little bit, so it could be a bad source.

How about the Chiasser, Cowen, ? For Eberle. Would that do it? Would you?
