2015 NHL Awards Predictions and Chatter

Post by spader on Sun Apr 12, 2015 2:35 pm

Well, lets hear your predictions. I had a hell of a time picking my winners and runners up.

We already know who won the Jennings (Price), Art Ross (Jamie Benn in a miracle), and Rocket (Ovie by a mile). Who do you think will win the other major awards? Here's my picks and thinking.

Hart is a two horse race. Either of Price or Ovie are good picks in this one.

Vezina is a pretty clear choice, with some muddy water in the runners up section. Price is the sexy pick, but Dubnyk, Holtby, Rinne, Fleury (ugh) could all be in the conversation.

The Calder is a tough pick for a different reason. This one is a logjam at the top. Any of Stone, Forsberg, Gaudreau, Ekblad, or Klingberg could take the top spot.

The Norris is usually easier to nail down. This year the likely runaway winner got injured and drops as a result. This one is wide open and could include a number of people, including a lot of repeat offenders like EK, PK, Weber, and Doughty. There are some people who are new to the conversation like Byfuglien, Carlsson, Josi, Faulk who are knocking on the door.

I don't always have an opinion on the Selke, but I think this year I'll chime in. Guys like O'Reilly, Toews, and Datsyuk always seem to be in the conversation. There are some newcomers like Stone (who will probably finish top-10 in voting) who are knocking on the door as well.

The Adams is a tough call too. There are lots of coaches who deserve consideration. Capuano, Hartley, Maurice, Vigneault, and Trotz all did tremendous things with their teams. Guys like Laviolette got inconsistent results down the stretch which hurts them.

Hart: Price, Ovechkin, Tavares (HM: Dubnyk)
Vezina: Price, Dubnyk, Holtby (HM: Rinne)
Calder: Stone, Ekblad, Gaudreau (HM: Forsberg)
Norris: Karlsson, PK, Weber (HM: Doughty)
Selke: O'Reilly, Tavares, Bergeron (HM: Stone)
Adams: Trotz, Capuano, Vigneault (HM: Hartley)
    Lady Byng: Who cares?

Those are my picks. What are yours? I didn't include fringe awards like the Messier or the GM of the year. Feel free to add that in if you like.

Are you sure about the Jennings? Both Chicago and Montreal had 189 goals-against.

Hammond has a legit shot at Masterton. Stone for Calder will be very close. I heard some people saying how the ballots had already been filled -- that's got to be BS, no? Adams has to be Hartley. Price will get the Hart -- first in everything, just about, including the playoff exit round.

I think you're right. I think he shares it with Crawford.

Haven't heard Eckblad mentioned at all in the last month. Did he cool off or is it because Florida feel out of the race? Don't forget the Panthers were ahead of the Sens when Stone started his march. He got his team into the post season.

Individual awards are not supposed to be affected by team performances but when those individual efforts directly affect the team's performance they pretty much do. That's why I think Stone and Karlsson have an adge over Eckblad and Doughty. Subban didn't have a Norris worthy season, it was the Price show down there.

The problem is I never really watched Ekblad at all, so I dunno how legit he is.

He's died off a lot yeah. Still looked pretty good this year as a teen Dman. I still think he's a front runner but who knows.

I think I've seen his name come up in just about every article I've read about the Calder race (which is quite a few).

    Also, it's Ekblad, not Eckblad.

EDIT: I just took a look at his stats. He finished with 39 points, played almost 22 minutes a night, and had 4 points in his last 5 games. Not a bad year for an 18 year old dman.

Is Stone gonna get the Calder, or is Johnny Hockey gonna take it?

Probably Johnny Hackey. He's American and they want to sell the game there.
