Clarke Macarthur done for the season

Post by Cap'n Clutch on Fri Jan 20, 2017 12:26 pm

Clarke Macarthur's season is over. Seems sketchy to me that he was cleared for full contact practice in December but, doctors are telling him to shut it down for the season. It seems like something they could have determined right after his concussion in training camp if it's a matter of too many concussions in a short period means, if he got another this season it could be very bad for him.

Not sure how it could be him not passing testing if he was cleared for full contact practice in December.

There's no silver lining for Clarke but for the sens his contract appears to be insured according to Garrioch which is immensely important when under bidget.

We likely will not know if he will ever come back until the present contract is over but it's a safe bet to count him as retired going forward.

I heard a few days ago that they had (by that point) "saved" about $1.9M. Less whatever the lowest-paid forward made during that time, of course, which would be around $450K. Now that he's done for the season the savings will be (roughly) $3M -- again, taking into account the cost of a replacement forward on the roster. Dorion can go shopping at the trade deadline.

Very interesting to see where the Sens go with this...do they just do a cheap rental, like a Purcell, or do they package up some assets and go for a more permanent solution?

The former would be the obvious sens move. I hope I'm wrong. Depending on the player obviously.

I see the Sens making a cheap rental move and then finding a more permanent solution in the off season when the picture becomes clear on what Clarke's future is.

They have quite a few players that will require raises soon, so I doubt they would be looking for a long-term solution. They will need to replace players with entry-level contracts and they have a few players that are ready (or soon will be) to step up. Think of the possibilities, though, replacing Mac ($3.72M is 80% paid by insurance) and Smith ($1.8875) with a $5.6M left winger. Landeskog makes $5.57M -- perfect.

    Landeskog-Turris-Stone
    Hoffman-Brassard-Ryan
    Pyatt-Pageau-Dzingel
    Paul-Lazar-Neil
    White

Landeskog would be sweeeeeeeeeeeet. Beyond sweet. Dorion called the asking prices "ridiculous" and I imagine that Landeskog's asking price would be something silly like Chabot + White + 1st or something like that and it goes from there.

Yeah but it would never happen at that price. The avs would probably have their heart set on chabot, a 1st and a lesser prospect that claesson

I would do (in the off season) Ceci, our 1st and someone like claesson for Lando and a 3rd.
Ceci is already a player. There's value there.

Landeskog would be sweet. The way the Sens are playing it is hard to justify brining in another center.

Who says we need a RW?  It's LW that is more of a priority.

Well...I guess it's open for debate. We have Bobby and Stone as the top two RW, and then Hoff, Smith, and Dzingel that can play LW....

IMO we need both. Top six LW is a must. But I have a feeling White plays at by the end of the year, so we likely need a top six LW and will gamble on White. Though Vrbata would be a nice fit. And I think they take a shot on Duclair who is now in the minors...

Rw depth is: stone, Ryan and Pyatt,  that's where we need help.  As opposed to Hoffman,  Smith and dzingel down the left.  Clear to see we need a rw

Stone,  Ryan,  Pyatt is what we have on the roster now,  but as had been mentioned,  we've got White in the wings (pun not intended),  as well as Lazar. We're talking about a 3rd line winger who can fill in for an injury. Swiss league is probably crawling with them.

On the left side we have Hoffman and Smith. Hoffman is probably a very good 2nd line winger and PP specialist. Smith is a very good 3rd line winger and PK specialist. He is fine to fill in on the 2nd line for an injury,  but really should not be there full-time.  Since Hoffmam is playing on the third line now we actually have Smith and Dzingel as the top six left wingers. Dzingel should definitely not be in the top six.

So the need is greater on the left. And,  yes,  we've done pretty well with a couple third liners playing top six and a third one playing like a third liner despite his salary.
