Who's The First To Go (And Where)

Post by DefenceWinsChampionships on Tue Jan 02, 2018 11:26 am

The season may be lost but our skepticism will forever live on.

Who are the victims of this 'retool' and where will they go?

My guesses all based off of who I think Ottawa would entertain trades with:

Smith to Chicago, Edmonton, or Tampa
    Brassard to Columbus, NYR, Islanders
Karlsson to Rangers, Islanders, Los Angeles
    Hoffman to Pittsburgh, Washington, Edmonton
    Ceci to Florida, Buffalo
    Burrows to Montreal
    Phaneuf to Arizona, Buffalo, Detroit
Ryan to New Jersey, Philly, Detroit, Minnesota
Thompson to Anaheim, Edmonton, San Jose
    Pyatt to Tampa

I think he should be traded but I believe the fan base would see this as an unpopular move. May not be the 'first' but I think he will be moved.

If I'm GM, I don't care what the fanbase thinks.

I honestly don't think you throw yet another log on the "pay them to not work for you" coach bonfire, so I think the Pierre-Guy show will return for another season, but they will be on a short leash with strong marching orders to play the future.

Up-front they simply have to make room forcaforementioned "future". Dumont is on a 2-way so he can be sent to Belleville -- no need to trade him. Both Pyatt and Thompson are reasonably priced, given what they bring, so I think one of them will be moved for a 3rd or late 2nd. Burrows will (should be) bought out. Lots of talk about Hoffman going out west so that's probably not going to happen.

On the back-end I think we will be losing Claesson or Harpur, in addition to Oduya. We simply have too many left-hand shots, so Jaros has to come, and you can't have that many youngsters on the back-end. Unless the extend Wideman, which seems very unlikely.

2-way has nothing to do with whether you can send somebody down. He would require waivers. It just means he makes less in the AHL

I know what it means.  If he gets claimed off waivers when he's sent down it's no big deal.  Didn't cost us anything, doesn't bring us anything we couldn't get from any one of a number of our own draft picks.

Edit: The point was that a 2-way means he's getting less to play in the AHL so he could get sent down; if he got picked, then even better -- save his AHL salary and roster space for another prospect (we've got quite a few I'd rather see playing), plus clear up another contract, just in case there's a college or other free agent they are thinking of adding (although that likely undoes the benefits of clearing out Dumont).

Why *should* he be dealt first? As for Claesson, he's had a rather poor showing (is this officially his sophomore year?) and I doubt he has much value outside of the organization. Could be wrong, though.

What do you have against Pageau?

Hes one of our best players. Should be kept.

On that note the guys I see getting dealt: Hoffman, Brassard and Ceci. Possibly smith. No one will take our garbage.

Pageau has been terrible this year. He's a good player, but nothing White and Brown won't be able to replace

At the end of the day the focus should be moving Phaneuf or Ryan. A lot of Ottawa's problems go away by moving at least one of those contracts.

I do think Brass is our best player to trade based on his term and low AAV. His cap hit is $5M but his actual salary is $3.5M. That's huge for anyone looking for a 2a or 2b center down the stretch. But this is also the reason why I don't see the Sens trading him. He's cheap.

Pageau is a fan favorite because he’s a small guy that is not afraid and he’s had a few huge playoff games. He is a good player but fans overvalue him.  Either White or Brown should be playing in that spot.  Pageau would get a really nice return from a team like Pitt that is desperate for an experience 3LC.
