Fair point. Anyways I’m happy if they really wanted Pinto . Let’s see if he pans out

The thing with Pinto is they had all night and morning to change their minds. They didn't have 5 minutes to make a decision - they had over 12 hours! So they were clearly happy with their decision.

What scares me is they had Sogaard listed as a 1st rd pick which is why the moved up to get him. Either their scouts see something that no one else in the league sees or they are completely out to lunch. But it is hard to question them. The Sens drafted Chabot and JBD. Chabot looks to be a star in the making while JBD looks to be a top-four dman. Pinto will be playing with Chabot and Tychonik so there is that element too.

2018 - people criticized Tkacuk over Zadina and I don't think anyone is upset about that anymore.
2017 - we took Formenton in the 2nd, Batherson in the 4th.
2016 - we took Lajoie with a 5th.
2015 - we took Chlapik with a 2nd, Wolanin with a 4th, Jaors with a 5th, and D'Accord with a 7th.

So I think people need to be patient. Dorion is on thin ice as far as I am concerned so there is a lot of pressure on him not to blow this. I think he did okay. He went off the board but his Donkey is on the line so he must feel really good about the decisions he made.

I agree. I said before that I’m not happy with the GMing of the draft, but I can’t question the picks because they have proven success. I will happily wait 4 years for one of this years crop to make their NHL debut.

There are also Gabriel Gagne which was a reach back then to move up and grab.

Sure I agree that they have a good track record but this franchise doesn’t take chances with talent that have flaws. They take chances with raw players or overagers. Sometimes you have to go for the huge talent that have flaws like the tarasenkos of the world to score huge.

They don’t

We will see how it pans out but I think we could have made out like bandits in this draft and we didn’t.

Tarasenko's flaw is that he is a Russian. Ottawa traded the 16th overall pick to St. Louis for Rundblad. They took a chance on a d-man and it didn't work out. Rundblad put up crazy numbers in the SEL.

For context, the next five players taken after Tarasenko were:

17. Joey Hishon
18. Austin Watson
19. Nick Bjugstad
20. Beau Bennett
21. Riley Sheahan

In the 2010/11 season, Ottawa finished 92 points and lost in the first rd. They were led by Spezza, Alfie, Michalek, Karlsson, Foligno, Turris and had young guys like Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman, Jakob Silfverberg, Nikita Filatov, Zibanejad, and Peter Regin breaking into the league. They were weak on defence with Karlsson leading the way anchored by a super old Gonchar and Kuba, Phillips, Cowen, and Brian Lee. It made complete sense to pass up on a Russian forward and to go for Rundblad.

So it's not always a matter of what the Sens should have done. There are reasons behind decisions. For those upset that they didn't take Kaliyev, there are reasons he dropped from a mid first to a 2nd rd pick and why so many other teams passed up on him. Pinto was their guy and they had a reason to take him. And if things don't work out, look at the above list. Where is Joey Hishon now? Answer: he's putting up 4 points a season in the SEL, and put up 2 points in the NHL.

Draft is a crapshoot.

I’d say Ottawa treats being Russian as a fault. Which they should probably stop doing. The KHL hasn’t really been able to hold back players whisking to play for Russia anymore and more Russians are coming over.

The reasoning on Runblad is interesting but BPA had Tarasenko much higher. He only dropped in the draft because he was Russian and was signed for another 2 years in Russia.
Sure we needed a Dman but he didn’t come a year later. I’m not sure this was the prime reasoning behind that move.

But there’s a whole history of Ottawa drafting safe players over talented ones.

Agreed. It's half the reason Ottawa is so bottom heavy. The other half being we don't resign our best players...

I’d just like to remind all the people that all of the sudden are loving Lassi Thomson that even though he is was the oldest player in this entire draft class, he faded horrendously down the stretch last season. That shouldn’t happen when you were born 8 days from being drafted with the 2018 class. Had he been born those 8 days earlier, we are talking about a 6th to 7th rounder most likely.

I’m not supper bothered about the lassi pick. It’s the 32nd overall that I think could have been better utilized.

I think Ottawa's drafting has generally been good enough to be given the benefit of the doubt. I know nothing about any of these kids other than the same stuff everyone else reads online, so who am I to form opinions?

It seems like they are stockpiling D and G very well. If many of those picks pan out, the D and G will be solidified for a decade.

And then the surplus D and Gs can be traded for forward help. It's all good.

I love the Thomson and pinto picks.

Thomson is gonna kill it here with Bran and wolanin and chabot and bernard-docker.

And as someone said, they had all night to re think the pinto pick and STILL came out despite getting trade offers and picked him.
