There weren’t any high end centres available where they picked, after Newhook was taken (not saying there weren’t food centre prospects available, just none that would be any better than the centre prospects we already have). You don’t pick for need in the draft anyway. I love the Sogaard pick because these goalies we have will not all be here in a few years. Adding to depth doesn’t mean you think your current guys aren’t going to pan out. We’ll see how it shapes up down the road.

I admit I was a bit disappointed we didn’t go for Kaliyev but lagoon was right about him dropping a ton and more often than not those guys end up complete busts

Ev, I will get to our friendly contest soon.

Needless to say the draft didn’t go like I expected and was hoping the Sens would both make bigger moves as well as stay on the board. They scout more than I do so I hope they got this draft right again.

Lodin was completely off the radar. Not one scouting service had him ranked at all. Comes from a hockey family - his father played pro for many years. Apparently he got noticed when they were scouting Ebert, but looking at his SHL stats when he got promoted I don't see much production. He should make Belleville's lineup but beyond that, no promises. Then, again, he's a 4th rounder. Still, you'd think they would swing for the fences.

Yeah, if I have a question mark on this draft it’s him. They went witha few overages guy which is fine I guess but doesn’t let them as much space to grow.
I too am disappointed we didn’t swing for the fences with Kaliyev, brink or Lavoie. There will constantly be a comparison between them and Pinto.

I’m not happy with the draft, I think as a group of 6 they will still have 0 NHL games played at the end of the 21-22 season. I’m also not going to get all bent out of shape though. If Dorion wants to stick his neck out and reach on every pick, go ahead. Scouting is the only thing he is known to be good at, so if he wants a career after getting fired from Ottawa, this draft will probably be the measuring stick. He should’ve traded down a couple times in my opinion, but he’s not a very good GM so that doesn’t surprise me that he either couldn’t or didn’t want to. I don’t know, I spend too much time caring about prospects.

This is fair. Much better than people destroying the draft because it didn't line up with random rankings. Praising or Dung on all the picks on Day 1 is absurd to me. Unless it's a clear cut pick like Hughes or whatever.

Did you see any of MannyElk's tweets ranking each team's performance at the draft? Here's Ottawa:

(21/31) OTT: F

Avg. skater age: 19.41
Total value: 5805865.6 (23rd)
Total value in excess: -1017119.4 (29th)
Mean value in excess: -169519.9 (31st)
Good pick %: 00.00% (31st)

They didn't make a single good pick.

What the bleep does any of that even mean?

Honestly, when I first saw that I thought it was a joke - how else can you explain someone ranking the results that can only be measured 3-4 years down the road? But, no, this appears to be 100% serious.

His rankings are literally based on analytics only, with no viewings of the players. If that's your thing then so be it but I wouldn't pay attention to them.

Where does he explain it? What does after have to do with it? How about normalizing offensive production based on linemates, team strength and strength of opposition? Does he even normalize got the development league? (E.g. you expect more scoring from forwards in the Q.)

He obviously puts in a lot of time for something I find is utterly useless!

It's all bs. They have models and don't allow room for any other opinion. One blogger said draft day is the best and only time to evaluate how you drafted. These guys would be lost discussing hockey with somebody in person.

Ev, this is what I’m talking about when it comes to my disappointment with the draft.
The LA Kings just tweeted this video, https://twitter.com/lakings/status/1143201944825057282?s=12
They wanted to give Ottawa their 33rd overall, plus a 6th rounder, for Ottawa’s 32nd overall. Dorion said no. Are you telling me that Dorion legitimately thought that LA was going to take Pinto with the talent that was still on the board? FYI, LA took Kaliyev. Brink, Lavoie, Grewe went later.

They could have? Who knows. Nobody is losing sleep over a 6th. Give me a third or fourth instead

Actually, lots of people have lost sleep over Mark Stone.

Fair point. Anyways I’m happy if they really wanted Pinto . Let’s see if he pans out

The thing with Pinto is they had all night and morning to change their minds. They didn't have 5 minutes to make a decision - they had over 12 hours! So they were clearly happy with their decision.

What scares me is they had Sogaard listed as a 1st rd pick which is why the moved up to get him. Either their scouts see something that no one else in the league sees or they are completely out to lunch. But it is hard to question them. The Sens drafted Chabot and JBD. Chabot looks to be a star in the making while JBD looks to be a top-four dman. Pinto will be playing with Chabot and Tychonik so there is that element too.

2018 - people criticized Tkacuk over Zadina and I don't think anyone is upset about that anymore.
2017 - we took Formenton in the 2nd, Batherson in the 4th.
2016 - we took Lajoie with a 5th.
2015 - we took Chlapik with a 2nd, Wolanin with a 4th, Jaors with a 5th, and D'Accord with a 7th.

So I think people need to be patient. Dorion is on thin ice as far as I am concerned so there is a lot of pressure on him not to blow this. I think he did okay. He went off the board but his Donkey is on the line so he must feel really good about the decisions he made.

I agree. I said before that I’m not happy with the GMing of the draft, but I can’t question the picks because they have proven success. I will happily wait 4 years for one of this years crop to make their NHL debut.
