Bulletin: Senators Sign Ryan Shannon to a One-Year Contract
Friday, 26.02.2010 / 2:30 PM / News
Ottawa Senators
OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has signed right-winger Ryan Shannon to a one-year contract.
Shannon has appeared in 55 games for the Senators this season, scoring five goals and 11 assists while recording 12 penalty minutes. He has posted four multi-point games this season, including a career-high three assists in Ottawa’s 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 3.
During the 2008-09 season Shannon posted career highs with eight goals, 12 assists and 20 points. In 170 career National Hockey League games, he has scored 20 goals and 40 assists and recorded 48 penalty minutes.
The native of Darien, Conn., was acquired by Ottawa from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defenceman Lawrence Nycholat on Sept. 2, 2008. Shannon split the 2007-08 campaign between Vancouver and its AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. The 26-year-old recorded five goals and 13 points in 27 games with the Canucks. He joined Vancouver on June 23, 2007, following a trade with the Anaheim Ducks for Jason King and future considerations.
Following a four-year career at Boston College, where he collected 150 points (51 goals, 99 assists) in 71 season games, Shannon signed as a free agent with Anaheim on Nov. 28, 2005. He stayed with the Ducks organization for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, helping them win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 2007.

That's one spot gone for a rookie or FA signing. Though I don't expect Donovan to play next season.

Nice, he's in a contract year every year

He's a good 3rd/4th line guy that can be relied upon to step up to the 1st/2nd line when needed, and does it without any attitude. Good thing it is a cheap signing too.
Re: Ryan Shannon re-signed by the Sens!
Not going to complain about it at that price.

One of the better bargains in the NHL IMO.

Was he really with Anaheim when they won the Cup? Does he have a ring?

Never knew that. Was he also a Murray signing (back in Anaheim)?

Another one year deal? Hmm. Perhaps Murray isn't confident that Shannon will play well outside of a contract year.

That's it? I'll take that for sure. $675,000 buys a lot of marshmellows for the campfire though.

Spezza makes that in seven games. That's a good signing at that price.

good signing for the Sens, good part of the team, wonder how long they keep giving him the 1 year deals.

I would have said this is a superfluous signing for the organization, but realistically, outside of Zack Smith I don't expect anybody to come up the ranks next year and challenge for a spot on a deep forward corps.

Re: Ryan Shannon re-signed by the Sens!
Good signing, cant really complain here. He plays that 3rd line role very well and has really picked up his game. At 625 and a guy that can do spot work in a lot of places, who can actually complain about this?
As for the one year deal, REALLY smart move by Murray, Shannon still needs to prove himself in terms of how much he really means to the team. Can he be replaced? Absolutely, but can he be replaced with someone better or at a better cap hit? I dont think so.
I hope for Shannon's sake that he can sign a 2 year deal after 10/11, but right now I think everyone is happy.

Pretty much exactly how I feel.
