Re: TRADE DEADLINE BONANZA!
Isn't it possible Cheech was waived (and inevitably demoted) to allow for the extra cap space Cullen, Lee and Smith bring with them? ie/ there's no other trade in the works now or on deadline day.

I think we can all agree that this means the following:
To NSH: Foligno and Lee
To OTT: Hamhuis
and
To EDM: Kuba, Kelly and Shannon
To OTT: Lubo and Fat Penner

No. Here's how it works.
A player gets put on waivers. He stays with the team; his salary stays with the team. Either he is picked up (and so no longer your concern), or he's not picked up. If he's not picked up, then you can either demote him or keep him with the team (you have something like a 30-day window to do this). If you demote him, he joins the minor league team and his salary comes off the cap books, although you have to keep paying his real dollars salary. If you don't demote him, then he stays with your team, salary and cap hit and all -- and it's as if he were never waived. To put a guy on re-entry, you have to waive him, have him clear, demote him, and then recall him.
I'd say there's a strong chance that the plan is to bury Cheechoo's cap hit, but until it happens, I don't want to speculate where we stand, cap-wise.
That first part where the player sticks around is something I definitely didn't realize. Thanks.
PS
Holy Dung, assign him to Bingo please.
I think it likely. With all these moves, the organization made a pretty clear announcement today that they believe in this team and want to go for it now. To clear that cap space, Melnyk has to eat the close to $1 mil remaining on Cheechoo's contract -- I did the math, the precise figure is about $913K -- a big figure, not no more than he ate last year on Gerber's. At the same time, Melnyk would also have to pay the salary of the new guy hypothetically coming in. So, all told, that means he has to spend about twice as much money to bury Cheechoo as to keep him.

As of this moment, with Cullen added and Cheechoo still on the books, we actually still have cap space (about $1.5 mil, prorated), so, no, I'd say that's not likely.

I think it highly probable that Cheechoo was waived with the intent of using that money to go after another defencemen, especially since they traded away Picard this morning, and know that Campoli is out for 4-6 weeks. I think OTT will for sure acquire a defencemen sometime before Mar. 3.

The second deal is a beauty, but I doubt Kuba waives to go to Edmonton.

Yep. You're going to need someone to stand in while Campoli's out (hopefully, Karlsson is back right after the Olympics), and you're going to need a reliable spare even when Campoli's back.
That said, I can definitely see us trading a young forward for a solid D now.

Re: TRADE DEADLINE BONANZA!
Im seriosuly stoked to see how Smith plays, I thought he had an amazing camp and should have been on the team over Lee to begin with. He's had a better season in Bingo and seems like he could get a strong look if he plays well, but we'll see.
A ton of depth right now, everywhere. Great situation for The Sens.

Oh, somehow SSF slipped Kelly by me in that trade proposal. I can't let him go SSF, he's blossomed into one of our best forwards under Clouston. Strong, defensive minded. Can't...

Yeah, I loved Smith in the pre-season. He was great. Really happy for him. Apparently he pinches in awkward moments in Bingo, so he'll have to be aware here, but he'll be fine!

I'm advocating right along with you for one more D... but I don't want to move 5+ more players from our roster to do it.

Here's the thing, we suffered through the last year and a half or whatever with Kelly doing not much. Now that we're winning, he's really valuable to us. He can save games left right and center the way he plays - and now he's on a shutdown line with Fisher and Alfie. When you lead in a game, Kelly's the guy you want. If you're constantly trailing, then he's useless.
Fat Penner is a nice player - and I think we can move to look at him in the summer, but now? I don't know Hoss...let's get that D-man.

It's also a very similar roster to the one that didn't make the playoffs and got bounced in the 1st round.
I agree about the grass. There are a lot more deals that I wouldn't make than there are deals I would make.

Foligno is a RFA at the end of the year, and it's not clear we're going to have the money to sign everybody we want to keep from this year's roster.
The following is a list of UFA/RFA players OTT is going to have to deal with:
Volchenkov
Campoli
Regin
Foligno
Shannon
Cullen
Winchester
You also have to consider when the kids (Z. Smith, Lee, D. Smith, Cowen, etc.) are going to get a chance. It's possible that Foligno may not be in our long-term plans.

OTT looking real hard into Ballard..Kelly and Lee could be going the other way..OTT also trying to find another forward.![]()
Huh. That's an interesting one. Don't see why we'd need more forwards, or how you can move Lee when that leaves you short a D.
The (first, early) deadline comes in 18 minutes!
Isn't Ballard a D?
Thanks in advance.
Isn't Ballard the guy who almost killed Vokoun by swinging his stick across his head? Is he worth Kelly and Lee? His numbers don't look all that hot.
