Total dud of a sports weekend. I guess I might check out the All Star Skills competition, although I usually regret that decision.

I watched about 20 minutes of the skills competition, but Sportsnet's production of it was driving me nuts, so I turned it off.

The 3 on 3 was fun. Canada won (they better have bought their goalie a huge steak dinner after that one). Seeing All McInnis do a clapper with a wooden stick was fun. Wonder what he would have clocked in with a composite stick back in his prime.

Good night for the tank. SJ loss, Anaheim win. Sens with a tough stretch coming up:

Caps, @ Tor, Ducks, Avs, @ Jets, @ Col, Ariz, Tor, Dal, Buf.

3-6-1 is my guess

LA was tied with Tampa going into the 3rd too but ended up losing to ruin a perfect tank night.

Well, this is pretty good news. If San Jose can sell off a couple guys, hopefully it makes them worse, although sometimes teams respond well to having bigger names traded off their roster for some reason.

Their big name is Dillon who is arguably their best defensive defenseman. SJ is screwed. They need to move Burns in the off-season if they can. I don't see a quick and easy way out for them. They can flip Thornton and Marleau for mid level picks but that's about all they can do right now.

Yes I saw that. What a blow to SJ. Not sure what Couture's timetable is but man, if they move Dillon, Thornton and/or Marleau they're toast. Their farm team is actually the worst team in the AHL too with only 14 wins. Their leading scorer has 28 points in 38 games with a -13. Not sure that anyone they call up will help them get a few points during the stretch run.

Also David Backes is apparently healthy but won't report to the AHL and won't play for the Bruins. One year left on his deal. $6M cap hit, $4M salary. His salary this year included a $3M bonus so the remaining $1M is prorated.

Sens should definitely inquire. Leafs gave up a first for Carolina to take Marleau. Throw in Ennis or Namestnikov and ask for a 1st back.

Yeah, the Sens could investigate a Backes trade. He does have a modified NTC so he has a list of teams, but might be willing to go anywhere at this point just to get ice time. If he can’t really play anymore I’m not sure I want him sucking up a roster spot here next year though….

Would you rather Backes or Sabourin?

The Sens need vet leadership next year. I agree Backes may not have the skill anymore but there is virtually no harm on a one-year deal. Makes losing any of our current vets and gaining an asset in the process more palatable.

Backes $6M on LTIR is the only way he was up here.

Sharks move Burns to forward, sign Zub out of the KHL.

Won't fix everything but that's a good start.

Just in case it's not clear that was a proposal not a rumour.
